Your Rights Under Federal Consumer Protection Laws

What every homeowner should know about solar contracts, financing, and legal protections.
At Solar Disposal Solutions LLC, we work with homeowners who were misled, pressured, or given incomplete information when signing a solar panel agreement. Many of these contracts involve financing terms, dealer fees, and hidden liens that were not fully disclosed — and that’s where federal consumer protection laws come in.
These laws are designed to protect your rights, ensure transparent financing, and hold sales organizations accountable for deceptive practices.
Truth in Lending Act (TILA)
TILA requires that you be given clear, accurate, and complete information about the true cost of your financing — including:
- The APR (Annual Percentage Rate)
- The total amount financed
- Any dealer markups, add-on fees, and interest charges
- Whether a lien will be placed on your home
If a dealer inflated the cost of your solar system or failed to disclose financing terms, that could be a TILA violation — and you may have the right to rescind (cancel) the agreement.
The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule & Home Solicitation Sales Act
If your solar system was sold to you in your home or outside a regular place of business, you may have had the right to cancel within 3 business days — but only if the seller gave you proper written notice of this right.
If that notice wasn’t provided, your right to cancel may still be valid.
Real Estate Disclosure Laws (RESPA, Dodd-Frank, HMDA)
When a lien is placed on your home through solar financing, certain laws require the dealer or lender to disclose everything — fees, interest rates, settlement costs, and more.
If you weren’t told there would be a lien, or you didn’t receive the required disclosure forms, this could be a serious legal violation.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Act & Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act
These acts prohibit companies from using unfair, deceptive, or misleading tactics — including making false promises about system performance, energy savings, or government rebates.
They also require clear disclosure of product warranties, maintenance obligations, and any limitations.
Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA)
You have the right to fair and equal treatment when applying for financing. Lenders must explain credit decisions and cannot discriminate or deny based on protected factors like age, gender, or race.
Why This Matters
Solar panel contracts often look like energy upgrades — but many are long-term financial agreements that place a lien on your home and include undisclosed dealer fees that inflate your payments.
If your dealer:
